A small grey tiger, a slightly insane dog, and one very impulsive decision.
One week ago I went on what was supposed to be a perfectly normal evening walk with Luna.
Nothing unusual.
Just our daily round through the neighborhood.
As we approached our building, I noticed something small and grey in the distance.
A kitten.
And that kitten had a very clear plan:
It was walking straight towards us while loudly announcing its presence with dramatic little “MIAU! MIAU!”
My immediate thought was:
Oh no. Kitten… that is a terrible idea.
Because Luna had seen it too.
And Luna’s brain instantly translated the situation into:
“CAT!!! THERE IS A CAAAAAT!!!”
Not exactly the ideal starting point for interspecies diplomacy.
Luckily I reacted fast enough to tie Luna’s leash to the nearest lamp post before things escalated into a National Geographic documentary.
Good decision.
Because the kitten did not slow down.
It ran straight towards me, climbed onto my shoulder like a tiny pirate parrot, and refused to let go.
At that moment it became clear that this kitten was either extremely brave, extremely hungry, or simply unaware that dogs and cats are not always the best of friends.
With a kitten clinging to my shoulder and a completely hysterical dog barking at the lamp post behind me, I quickly checked the area around our building.
Maybe the kitten belonged to someone nearby.
Maybe there was a mother cat or a group of kittens somewhere.
But after asking neighbors and looking around, I found absolutely nothing.
So I made a very spontaneous decision:
Both the kitten and the barking dog came upstairs with me.
Emergency kitten protocol
The kitten was indeed hungry like a tiny lion.
It immediately attacked a bowl of lactose-free milk as if it hadn’t eaten in days.
After that, I improvised a temporary bed in a cardboard box in the guest room.
Later that evening I searched the neighborhood again for the rest of the cat family.
Nothing.
Nobody had seen the kitten before.
No one knew where it came from.
Meet Pepper
Fast forward one week.
The kitten now has a name:
Pepper.
Because she’s grey, striped, and clearly has a lot of pepper in her personality.
Pepper lives on top of my living room wall unit – which currently functions as the official kitten safety zone.
From up there she has a perfect view of the apartment… and of Luna.
Pepper talks a lot.
She uses the litter box like a professional.
And because I did not expect to suddenly adopt a kitten, she currently survives on dog food.
She seems perfectly fine with that arrangement.
Luna vs. Pepper
The biggest challenge is of course Luna.
At first she was completely overwhelmed by the existence of a tiny moving cat in her living room.
But over the last week she has actually made progress.
She can now watch Pepper without completely losing her mind.
She sits on the sofa.
Pepper sits on the shelf.
And the two of them observe each other like two slightly confused philosophers.
However, if Pepper gets too close, Luna still attempts what I like to call a very enthusiastic scientific investigation.
Unfortunately Luna’s research methods are not exactly gentle.
So direct contact is postponed for now.
Will Pepper stay?
That question is still open.
Maybe Pepper will stay with us.
Maybe she will eventually find another home.
For now she is safe, fed, and growing – and that is good enough.
Sometimes life simply throws a tiny grey kitten onto your shoulder.
And suddenly your dog has accidentally adopted a cat.
Welcome to Tunisia, Pepper.
